As the trunk sloughs off bark, it exposes an inner bark that is a mottled patchwork of browns, yellows and greens. This gives the tree gorgeous texture in winter even after the leaves have fallen.

American Sycamore will usually begin flowering at age 6 or 7, and you'll see these blooms appear in early spring as the leaves start to pop out. They will be tiny and crowded together in ball-shaped clusters, starting out green and turning a deep red.
