Green Elephant Ear
Low-Maintenance Tropical Plant
The Green Elephant Ear plant has huge, broad green leaves that can reach up to three feet across. The leaves are triangular in shape with a slightly ruffled edge and each one really does resemble the ear of an elephant. Each heart-shaped leaf is held aloft by a thick stalk that rises up to three feet high from a tuberous bulb. A stunning specimen plant, elephant ears also make a handsome backdrop for bright blooms. These lush emerald-hued Elephant Ears are fast growers. Plant them in the spring, just after the last threat of frost, to see a mature plant by early summer. They can also be started indoors a few weeks early. These plants like a bit of shade and a moist environment. Gardeners in warmer climates can leave Elephant Ear bulbs in the ground through the winter. Those in zones with frosts and freezes should dig up and store their bulbs to protect them from the cold. Bring a little something exotic to your garden with Green Elephant Ears.
