The common name for this popular shrub is Japanese Mock Orange from the delightful, fragrant blooms. Each branch tip bears clear white blossoms in spring that age to pale yellow. You’ll have weeks to enjoy the lovely aroma as the flowers hold on for weeks. The fruit is a pear shaped pod that begins green and turns brown. While not showy, its presence adds a distinct little finial to the tip of the stems.
A beautiful broadleaf evergreen that loves hot summers.
The Pittsoporum is a slow growing plant that will over time grow to be rather large. Planted in full sun, you get more flowers and a smaller finished size. It thrives nicely in shade and retains the natural densely rounded shape. A more mature Pittsoporum makes a handsome specimen when pruned into a tree form. Homeowners who live near the ocean will have no foliage problems due to salt spray.
This rugged bush tolerates drought very well.
Homeowners who live where there is little rainfall will find this plant to be an excellent landscape choice. This shrub will not take kindly to sitting in water. In heavy clay, you will want to plant the Pittsoporum in a raised bed. This will solve the problem of root rot that the plant can develop without adequate drainage.
Pittsoporum offers a selection of uses in your yard.
Due to the very dense nature of it’s branching this evergreen takes well to shearing. It makes an excellent hedge in places that the bushes must be kept rather low. When waiting for it to mature is not an issue, the Pittsoporum also makes a wonderful year around hedge. It can also be used as a specimen plant, especially when pruned into a tree with lower plants around it.
All the Pittsoporum sold at Brighter Blooms will have strong root systems.
