Powerful Fall Color from this Large Shrub
Called the Staghorn Sumac by Native Americans because of the shape of the red berry clusters on the branches, it offers unique ornamental possibilities.
This tall shrub grows upwards of 8 feet tall and grows naturally in the Northeastern United States. Because of its drought tolerance and adaptability, it can thrive in other parts of the country as well.
The broad flat leaves of this deciduous plant grow in pinnate formation, but they are not the real attraction for the Staghorn.
In addition to the berry clusters, this Sumac offers blooms in mid-summer. The blossoms are most often yellow-green, but some Staghorn Sumacs have been known to produce scarlet and golden blooms as well.
The Staghorn Sumac can be planted on lawns and in gardens to add distinction and style to any landscape.
