A Designer Plant for Your Garden

Its common name gives a nod to the high-fashion city in Italy. Milan Coral Bells (Heuchera ‘Milan') adds a designer touch to the garden with its showy leaves and masses of summer flowers. The dense foliage on rounded plants starts with an early-season silvery sheen that persists through summer before progressing to a rich maroon in autumn. During this foliage color transformation, spikes of pink flowers take center stage in summer!

Sizzle in the City

Plants in the Heuchera City™ Series have been bred specifically for these outstanding qualities:

Long bloom season. Other types of coral bells flower profusely once in summer, but when the blooms fade, that's it for the season. Milan Coral Bells are re-bloomers, so when the flowers open in summer, the plants continue to produce flowers all summer long!

Showy flowers. The flowers are showier than most types of coral bells because horticulturists combined the best flowering qualities of two different coral bell species to breed a profusely blooming, improved generation of flowering plants.

Tidy, compact plants. Milan Coral Bells won't flatten out or become patchy-looking over time. They retain their tight growth habit to keep your garden looking neat and tidy.

Try these Design Tips

A mass planting of Milan Coral Bells makes a stunning display in any shady garden. But even a single specimen plant, artistically placed, creates a focal point that brightens any shady spot with its silvery, shimmery leaves. In a container garden, Milan Coral Bells is beautiful as a standalone plant or in a mixed combination of other foliage or flowering plants with complementary colors and textures.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Sun. A little sun is okay, but too much sun can stress plants. Sun that's filtered through trees or some morning sun is ideal, with mostly shade the goal to shoot for.

Soil. Milan Coral Bells is not fussy about the type of soil it needs. You can plant it in soils that contain clay, sandy or loam, but regardless of the type of soil, good drainage is important. Keep the crowns slightly above the soil surface; otherwise, crown rot may be a problem.

Water. Keep new plants well-watered – just so the soil is evenly moist, not soggy – to help their root systems get off to a good start. When plants are established, water them if the top 3 inches of soil dries out.

Fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing too much so you don't burn plants. Make one light application in spring, with a slow-release fertilizer.

Pruning. When the new growth starts in spring, trim away all the older (outer) leaves to keep plants looking their best.
