Bigger Blueberries on a Strong Plant

Plant breeders rate the size of blueberries, and Spartan Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Spartan’) is a performer in the highest category – “Very Large.” That’s exactly what you’ll harvest from these plants – huge berries, which also have superior flavor. This early-ripening cultivar yields up to 10 pounds of blueberries on each mature shrub, so you’ll have plenty for snacking, baking, and canning!

Checklist for Prolific Plants
As a northern highbush variety, Spartan Blueberry is native to the eastern U.S., and it’s a perennial in the cooler climates of USDA Zones 4 through 7. Plant breeders produced this cultivar with a climate-adaptive quality for blooming late but ripening early, which means that the flowers may escape being killed by late spring frosts and more berries can be produced. You’ll successfully grow healthy shrubs that meet their maximum fruiting potential by using these growing tips:

Sun. Spartan Blueberry plants thrive in full-sun locations.

Soil. Acidic soil is best, with a ph range between 4.5 and 5.5. Plants may struggle in neutral or alkaline soils, so determine the suitability of your garden soil by having the soil tested. And be sure that the soil drains well, because Spartan Blueberry roots will rot in soggy sites.

Water. Because blueberries are shallow-rooted plants, they will suffer in drought conditions. Adding mulch, such as pine bark, to a depth of 3 to 4 inches will help conserve the soil moisture, and it will also help protect the shallow roots from injury. You’ll need to water young plants often, until they become established, and mature plants will need 1 inch of water per week.

Fertilizer. Don’t fertilize Spartan Blueberry when you plant them. Observe the recommendations of a soil test for proper amounts and types of fertilizer.

Pruning. You won’t need to do any pruning on your plants for the first couple of years. In January or February (beginning with the third year after transplanting), remove a few of the older canes by cutting them back to the ground. This will prompt new growth that will produce more fruit. As a rule of thumb, mature shrubs should have no more than 12 canes growing from their base.

Removing flowers. By removing the flower buds in the first and second years after you plant your Spartan Blueberry shrubs, you’ll be allowing the plants to use their growing energy toward producing a strong root system and vigorous shoots.

Do You Need More Than One Plant?
While the Spartan Blueberry bush is self-fertile, you may plant at least one other type of blueberry plant to ensure good cross-pollination of the flowers. Three different blueberry plants are even better, and if you have room in your yard, consider planting a hedgerow of blueberries to increase the yield even more. Then, just leave it up to the bees to pollinate the flowers for you, and wait for an abundant harvest!
