Now You Can Grow Blueberries on Your Patio

Even if you didn’t grow these blueberries as an edible crop, you’d want to grow the diminutive Top Hat Blueberry (Vaccinium x ‘Top Hat’) for its ornamental beauty in patio pots! This dwarf blueberry grows only 2 feet tall and wide, and it’s covered in springtime with a flurry of white flowers. It actually does produce edible pea-sized blueberries, sweet as they can be, that you’ll be able to enjoy as you’re sitting on your patio!

Landscape Design and Container Culture
Top Hat Blueberry is a versatile little plant that you can use in so many ways – as a deciduous edging plant for your sunny flower garden, sidewalk, or driveway; in your herb garden; or in patio pots or balcony planters. You can even cultivate this charming plant as a stunning bonsai specimen. And it is a darling addition to a fairy garden, which is all the rage in miniature garden design!

Do You Need More Than One Plant to Produce Fruit?
If you want a plant that is covered with tiny blueberries, you’ll need to have another type of blueberry planted nearby (for cross-pollination). If you do not plant another variety or cultivar, your Top Hat Blueberry may only have a few (if any) blueberries. A perfect solution would be to have a staggered landscape design by planting a grouping of Top Hat Blueberry plants in front of larger blueberry shrubs. Just be sure to leave enough space between the rows or clumps to allow for the mature size of the larger plants.

A Few Hints and Helps
Sun. Plant Top Hat Blueberry in full sun, although it can handle a little afternoon shade.

Soil. Make sure your garden soil (or container mix) is acidic – with a ph of 4.5 to 5.5 – and that it drains well.

Water. Keep plants well-watered if it doesn’t rain, and remember that the soil in containers will dry out much faster than the soil in the ground. Add mulch – even in containers – to keep the soil moist.

Fertilizer. Only fertilize your Top Hat Blueberry based on soil-test recommendations, because the roots are sensitive to over-fertilization and plants can be harmed by excessive fertilizer.

Winter care. Top Hat Blueberry is a perennial in USDA Zones 3 through 7. But if you grow these dwarf plants in patio pots or other containers, the roots will not be insulated by the ground, which means you’ll have to make an adjustment by two zones warmer. For example, Top Hat Blueberry plants are hardy to Zone 3 when planted in the ground, but elevated above ground level in containers, they’ll survive winters only to Zone 5.
