    Yellow Flowers Brighten Winter Landscapes

Amid the slumbering plants of winter, Winter Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) bursts into unexpected bloom with its cheerful yellow flowers! Even before the leaves emerge, trumpet-shaped blossoms cover the long stems of this vining shrub. Although they look delicate, the golden flowers sometimes open with a blanket of snow surrounding them.

    A Tough Beauty
You might imagine that a plant able to bloom in snowy conditions is pretty resilient … and you’d be right! Winter Jasmine is not only tolerant of cold, but it also brings a host of other superior characteristics to the table, such as:

Low maintenance. In today’s busy world, gardeners want more low-maintenance plants for their landscapes. Winter Jasmine is not only drought-tolerant, but it’s also tolerant of many soil types and environmental conditions. It “rolls with the punches,” and keeps thriving.

Shade tolerance. Although this plant flourishes in full sun, it can also handle partial shade. It’ll even tolerate full shade, although flowering will be less profuse in deep shade.

Deer resistance. Winter Jasmine is not on deer’s favorite menu of plants, so they typically pass it by on their way to other choices.

    Garden Appearance and Design Tips
Winter Jasmine is one of the best plants for cascading over retaining walls. Although it’s deciduous, which means it loses its leaves in autumn, its bare stems add a textural quality to the landscape in winter. And when the flowers bloom, they enliven bare winter landscapes. Because the stems easily root wherever they touch the ground, Winter Jasmine also makes a terrific groundcover. If you plant it as a groundcover on hilly areas and steep banks, it holds the soil in place, which prevents erosion. It also creates a stunning vertical look when trained to a trellis.

    Helps Sustain Winter Pollinators
It’s so important to include plants in your landscape design that have staggered bloom times through all four seasons to sustain the insect pollinators, such as bees. Bees are not as active in winter as they are in spring and summer, but when late winter temperatures begin to warm in early spring, bee activity increases. It’s during this critical time that few plants are in bloom as a food source for the bees. Winter Jasmine is a wonderful nectar and pollen source when other flowering plants are still dormant. When you plant this valuable vining shrub, you’ll enjoy the flowers as much as the bees will!
