    The Top Houseplant for 2018

Join scores of decorators who have discovered the design potential of the ornamental Fiddle Leaf Fig. “On-trend” is how Dr. Paul Thomas of the University of Georgia describes the fiddle leaf fig. The University of Minnesota Extension calls it “living sculpture”; and The New York Times calls it “the ‘it’ plant of the design world.” You won’t grow this plant to harvest edible figs – that’s another type of plant in the Ficus family – but you’ll definitely want to grow the Fiddle-Leaf Fig.

This is The Houseplant You’re Seeing All Over Pinterest
Interior Design Artists are Going Crazy Over The Fiddle Leaf Fig!

Dramatic Leaves. The signature feature of Fiddle-Leaf Fig is its massive oval-shaped leaves, which can grow up to 15 inches long and 10 inches wide. Many of the leaves grow into a violin, or fiddle, shape, which explains the plant’s name.

Superior Container Plant. Whether you grow Fiddle-Leaf Fig inside or outdoors, it is easy to grow as a potted plant. In fact, it’s because of its design appeal in containers that you’ll see it in the pages of upscale interior design magazines.

Disease- and Pest-Resistant. Not too many pests bother Fiddle-Leaf Fig, so you won’t have to spray it with chemicals to keep the bugs away. This is always a plus when you’re growing plants indoors, because you don’t want your living space invaded by insects. And if you’re growing Fiddle-Leaf Fig outdoors, even pesky deer rarely nibble on this plant.

Fiddle-Leaf Fig grows as an evergreen perennial in only the far south, where it does not freeze (Zone 10). If you live in this zone, you can grow it year-round as an outstanding landscape plant. But it truly excels as a statement plant for your home or office.

In a container, or planted indoors, it typically reaches a height of around 6 feet. Its bold leaves and vase shape allow it not only to fill a bare wall space but also to give any room in your home or office a touch of architectural flair. When you order Fiddle-Leaf Fig, you’re adding an elegant touch to your interior design scheme. But don’t take our word for it – flip through some home or office décor magazines, and you’re sure to see this trendy plant!

    Fast-Growing Evergreen Landscape Plant
If you live in Zone 10, stand back and watch it grow up to 36 inches each year! 10- to 25-foot heights are typical. The large leaves on these dense-foliage plants block undesirable views, and a grouping of three or five Fiddle-Leaf Figs forms a thick green screen to give you privacy around your backyard sitting area.

    Striking Container Plant
Choose an impressive pot that reflects the design scheme in your home or office, plant it with your newly arrived Fiddle-Leaf Fig, and you’ve quickly and easily created a custom accent that complements your décor! You’ll want to consider a glazed ceramic pot or other heavy container that won’t tip over under the weight of Fiddle-Leaf Fig as it grows. Make sure the pot has drainage holes so the water drains freely, and tuck a large dish or saucer underneath to protect your carpeting, tile, or wood floors.

Many Perfect Locations for Your Potted Fiddle-Leaf Fig
Think of a place in your home or office that’s brightly lit without receiving too much direct sun and that’s not too close to air-conditioning or heating vents.

To Keep Your Plant Healthy and Happy
Fiddle-Leaf Fig is not a particularly fussy plant, but it will perform its best if you choose a good location and know the conditions it likes best, using these tips:

Sun. Because this plant can tolerate some shade, it’s perfect as an interior potted plant. Whether you grow it inside or outdoors, partial shade is optimal. If it’s in a sunny location, morning sun is better than harsh afternoon sun. Too much direct sun may burn the leaves, especially if the sunlight is intensified by glass windows that are too close to your plant.

Water. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Fiddle-Leaf Fig doesn’t like “wet feet” – roots that stay in soggy soil. If the surface of the soil is dry, check a few inches down. If it’s still dry at that depth, it’s time to water again.

Good drainage. If you plant it outside, make sure the soil is loose and it doesn’t hold water for long periods after it rains. In pots, use a loose potting mix that formulated especially for containers, and empty drainage dishes after excess water drains from the pot. Make sure the holes in your pot are not blocked and drain freely.

Humidity. As a native of African rainforests, Fiddle-Leaf Fig thrives in humid conditions. Although you don’t have to grow it in a steamy environment, using a humidifier in dry, wintry weather helps keep this plant in optimal health. Locate Fiddle-Leaf Fig away from heating vents, which dry the leaves. Tropical plants like warm temperatures, so if you place your Fiddle-Leaf Fig pot near a cooling vent, it won’t like the cold blasts of air! Insider’s Growing Tip: Cluster multiple plants together to increase the humidity around them. Groupings are also a way to maximize the design impact of plants, whether you’re growing them indoors or in the landscape.

Fertilizer.Fiddle-Leaf Fig doesn’t need a lot of fertilizer. Once or twice a month, give it some water-soluble fertilizer, which you apply when you water your plant.

Dusting. The broad leaves will collect dust over time, which clogs the leaf pores. Simply mist the leaves and use a soft cloth to remove any dust as it accumulates.

A “Homebody.” What we mean by this is that Fiddle-Leaf Fig doesn’t like to keep moving from place to place. When you find the perfect spot for it, leave it there and let it settle into its new home. If you do need to move it, don’t be alarmed if it drops some of its leaves. Ficus plants tend to react this way if they find themselves in a new environment. You’ll quickly see it regrow the dropped leaves.

    Heads-Up for Fruit
Even though Fiddle-Leaf Fig is not the edible fig species, you may see small fruits on your plant. You’re more likely to notice these fruits if you grow this plant in the landscape, but if you grow it as a houseplant, you’ll probably never see these fruits. If you do, don’t think your plant has a mysterious disease!

    Latex Allergies
All ficus species, including Fiddle-Leaf Fig, have a milky white sap that contains latex. When you prune any of the branches or twigs, you’ll see this sap. If you have a latex allergy, wear gardening gloves when pruning.
