Planting Apple Trees

Apple Trees are perfect for easy growth because they are simple to plant and keep. They are actually known as the fruit tree "starter." Plus, because your Apple Tree already boasts several years of development by the time it arrives at your door, you could harvest healthy fruit as soon as the first year.

How to Plant Apple Trees

  • When? Spring is perfect for planting.
  • Where? Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil (about 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day).
  • How? Place your Apple Tree in a hole big enough to accommodate the entire root system, pack tightly and water. It’s that simple.

How to Prune Apple Trees and More

We’ve grafted your tree from a specific “mother” variety, so you can expect consistency and ease for the life of your Apple Trees. That means you'll get the same delicious fruit, season after season.

When it comes to caring for Apple Trees, it’s simple – we follow the five Ps: Planting, Pruning, Pollination, Picking and Preparation.

  • Planting: Choose a sunny area, place your tree in a hole big enough to accommodate its entire root system, backfill your soil, and water and mulch to finish.
  • Pruning: Prune during winter, around the third year of growth, by removing any suckers or sprouts from the base, along with downward-growing or broken branches.
  • Pollination: Our Apple Trees are generally self-fertile, but purchasing two or more ensures a larger harvest. Check out our pollination chart below for more information, or our product pages where we've recommended the best pollination partners for each type.
  • Picking: Pull up on the apple and give it a twist – it will come off your tree easily when it's ready. You can cut one open to check for ripeness, but ripe apples should have brown seeds and a sweeter taste.
  • Preparation: Expect to get 20 boxes of apples that weigh up to 42 pounds each per tree! Depending on the variety of your tree, your apples will stay good anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks to 3 to 6 months. If you're unable to use them, preserve by canning or dehydrating.
