Great for medium-sized landscapes, this kit will span a width of approximately 50-60 feet when the varieties are planted all together. Planting & Care
1. Planting:
- Emerald Green: This Thuja grows best in full sun but can withstand partial shade (afternoon sun is best in this case). For best results, plant these trees six feet apart to enjoy their pyramid shape, or four feet apart for a dense hedge. When planting, dig a hole that's just as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. If the top of the root ball is lower than the surrounding soil, remove the tree and fill in part of the hole. Replace the tree and fill in the hole with the same soil you removed. You do not need to add anything to the soil. Mulch around the tree with shredded hardwood mulch. A layer three inches thick, extending three feet, around the tree is ideal.
- Wine & Roses: Start by choosing an area with full sun to partial sun (at least 4 hours of sunlight daily) and well-drained soil – the Wine & Roses® is adaptable to nearly any type, as long as there’s no standing water, and it will adapt to some shade. When you’re ready to plant, dig a hole large enough to accommodate your plant’s roots, place your tree and backfill the soil and then water to settle the roots.
2. Watering:
- Emerald Green: Water your new tree weekly or twice weekly by holding a hose around it and counting to 20. After the first month, water just once a week unless it is dry and hot (no rain and temperatures above 80 degrees). If it is hot and dry, water twice a week. After the first six months, the trees will be established and subsist on rainfall alone.
- Wine & Roses: Water your Wine & Roses® regularly during the first growing season, or about once per week. You may need to water more often during times of extreme heat. But if you’re not sure when to water your Weigela, however, simply check the soil about 2 to 3 inches down – if the soil is dry here, it’s time to water.
3. Pruning:
- Emerald Green: The Emerald Green Thuja grows well without pruning. In fact, this is one tree that needs no pruning, other than to remove dead branches. If you do decide to hedge this tree, make sure that when you trim, the bottom of the tree is wider than the top.
- Wine & Roses: Pruning is not necessary for your Wine & Roses® Weigela – simply space your plantings to allow your Weigela to grow naturally. If you want a more formal appearance, prune annually after the second flowering period at the end of summer.
4. Fertilizing:
- Emerald Green: Support growth by using an all-purpose evergreen tree and shrub fertilizer starting in the Spring.
- Wine & Roses: Fertilize your Wine & Roses® with a slow-release solution before new growth begins in the spring.
