Red October Big Bluestem Grass Andropogon gerardii ‘Red October’

Product Description

Changing Colors from Spring Through Winter!

The Red October Big Bluestem Grass is ideal for gardeners seeking dramatic hues in fall and winter. As other plants change color and lose their leaves, this tall, swaying grass starts showing off its dramatic red color, making it the perfect choice for gardeners who want to extend the color in their landscapes.

The grass has a silver-green tint in spring, before turning a bright red in fall. Even winter doesn’t dampen the vibrancy of this ornamental grass - instead, it takes on a red-bronze color that adds contrast in the colder season! Another standout feature is its “turkey foot” flowers, ranging in color from yellow to burnished scarlet.

Gardeners love the Red October Big Bluestem Grass for its many rewards, with little effort. In addition to its many seasons of color, the plant builds interest in your yard by attracting birds and butterflies. At the same time, it is deer-resistant and drought tolerant, and requires little care other than regular watering.

The Red October Big Bluestem Grass is ideal as an accent plant, though a row of plants can also add privacy or erosion control to your landscaping. Plus, it does well in pots, making it perfect as an accent for walkways or entryways.

The Red October Big Bluestem Grass is a low-maintenance, colorful grass that will return year after year. Don’t wait to order your own!

Note: If you purchase this grass in fall-winter, it may be cut back for the plant’s health. If your grass is cut back, don’t worry - it will grow even happier and healthier next spring!

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant your Bluestem in an area with full sun (about six hours of sunlight daily) and well-drained soil. Dig a hole that’s large enough to accommodate your plant’s root ball, place your plant, backfill the soil, and water to settle the roots.

If you choose to plant in a pot, select a container that’s about twice as large as your plant’s shipped container (and ensure it has drainage holes). Use organic soil mix, place your plant, and fill the pot with soil, leaving about two inches free at the top. Finally, water your newly-potted plant to settle the soil.

2. Watering: When the top of the soil feels dry down to about two or three inches, water your Bluestem. If your area doesn’t receive consistent rainfall, be sure to water your plant. Otherwise, Bluestem Grass requires very little additional maintenance.
