This plant may not thrive in your area
Most crape myrtles come in shades of soft lavender and pure white, but not the Tuscarora Crape Myrtle...it's made one-of-a-kind by a special shade of deep coral pink, delighting guests and neighbors alike with this rare shade for months.
Plus, this pretty tree grows quickly and without fuss. Its moderate size and beautiful color make it a perfect front yard tree, border planting and beyond. The Tuscarora's show kicks off in spring with an umbrella of deep green foliage...then, when many plants have ceased to bloom, this variety takes over with an explosion of coral flowers.
Even better? It thrives in the heat and the cold...all the way down to a whopping 0 degrees. Crape Myrtles for growing zone 6 are difficult to find, but Tuscarora gives you color in the chilliest locations across the country.
Fall sees this tree light up in shades of scarlet and orange. And even in wintertime, the tree's interesting seed pods, complex network of trunks and peeling, cinnamon-spotted bark lend an eye-catching pop to your garden.
Simply plant in full sun, give it a little water, and watch the color and iconic growth emerge. Because we've planted, grown and nurtured your Tuscarora Crape Myrtle for months ahead of shopping, you reap the carefree, colorful rewards. You won't find this color variety at your local nursery or big-box store. When you order from Brighter Blooms, not only do you get this rich Tuscarora color, delivered right to your door, but you also get a healthy, intact root system.
Whether it's lining the street or accenting your house, the Tuscarora always gets attention. Get your own Tuscarora Crape Myrtle today!
1. Planting: Crapes are full sun lovers, so try and find a spot where they will get as much sun as possible...about 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily with well-drained soil.
After you have found your planting area, make your hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Place your Crape in the hole and make sure that the root crown (where the root ball meets the trunk(s) of the tree) is level with the soil surface. Tamp down the soil lightly as you backfill the hole to prevent air pockets from forming and then water after you’ve finished. Mulch the area around the tree to conserve water moisture.
2. Watering: After planting, water regularly to start. If the climate is hot, you may need to water a few times weekly, especially in lighter soils. During the cooler seasons, you’ll only need to water once weekly. But if you're not sure when to water, simply check the soil about 2 or 3 inches down in the surrounding area. If the soil is dry here, it's time to water.
3. Fertilizing: Your Tuscarora Crape will greatly benefit from a light application of a complete, balanced, slow-release fertilizer formula in the early spring and summer seasons.
4. Pruning: Prune in the late winter, removing all but 4 to 5 strong trunks and then removing the lateral branches around the bottom half of the tree. To encourage branching, make your cuts on the longer, leggy limbs. And remove any damaged or crossing branches during the late winter.
